Kate Canfield, Acupuncture Physician
Hi. Thanks for stopping by! I am Kate Canfield and I am often asked how I came to be an Acupuncture Physician. Well, here is my story.
It took 12 years of chronic debilitating illness for me to find my calling. But that illness turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. It’s true. I found my true calling as an acupuncturist and natural medicine practitioner after a 12 year ‘mystery’ illness that no MD could identify, or help me with.
In 1993 I had surgery on my knee for a torn meniscus. I had been told it would be a breeze and I could start running again within a few weeks. In the beginning, all went according to plan; but two weeks later my life changed forever. It was the middle of July and hot, so I spent the afternoon cooling off in the river. The next day my entire thigh swelled to triple its normal size and by afternoon I had a fever of 105 degrees, with chills so violent I almost shook myself off the my seat. It was 98 degrees out and I couldn’t get enough blankets on me to get warm.
So, I did what anyone would do. I went to the doctor. They were alarmed at my condition and told me I had a serious infection that could easily progress to a life or death situation. Next thing I knew I was in the hospital with tubes, IV’s, and high powered antibiotics. When I went home a week later I was told to continue the intensive oral and IV antibiotic therapy. This went on for almost four months. I was a good patient and did everything the doctors told me to do. The knee infection cleared, but four months later I developed a low grade fever and facial swelling that was diagnosed as Mumps. My family doctor put me on a week of bed rest but I didn’t get better. As a matter of fact, my health continued to deteriorate.
Leaving no stone unturned, I traveled across the country, but none of the many specialists I saw throughout the years could tell me what was causing the low grade fever, facial swelling, fatigue, insomnia, raging PMS, and digestive problems. All the tests were negative but I had gone from being athletic, fun, and happy to miserable, tired, and sick.
I took the anti-depressants, sleep aids and other prescriptions but continued to get worse. Nothing was working. Finally, I was told I had Fibromyalgia and I would just have to try to manage the symptoms the best I could with prescription medicines. Over the years, my condition deteriorated until the brain fog became so bad that I couldn’t even do the simple math in my check book.
Now, if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, you know the symptoms are no joke. But let’s be real here. When you feel like crap all the time, you want to know why. There HAS to be a reason. And when you’ve ruled out all the scary stuff like cancer, ms, auto immune disorders, etc., you start to wonder if you aren’t crazy after all.
At least that’s what happened to me. And no, it didn’t help. I continued to get worse. Until I finally gave up, quit my job, and moved back to my sleepy little home town where I hoped my family would care for me. That’s when I stumbled upon an acupuncture doc who gave me back my life. Now, don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t an instantaneous miracle cure, but I was willing to do whatever it took to feel better. I did everything he told me to do –changed my diet, cooked and drank those God-awful herbal teas, went for regular acupuncture appointments – and within six weeks I was living again! I could ride my bike and walk on the beach. The brain fog lifted and my digestive system began to function again. I had my energy back! And that’s how I decided to become an acupuncture doctor.
I was at a crossroads, having quit my job. Now that I could function again, I needed to go back to work. I knew there were many more people out there who were just like I had been. They were sick. And tired. And miserable. And the conventional health care system was just not working for them. My experience proved there was another way. I knew that if I could recover from such a dismal state, that others could, too. And I wanted to help. So I spent the next three years in school to learn that other way. Now, I use acupuncture and natural medicine to help people with almost any health issue from the complex and chronic to simple pain, anxiety, depression, and everything in between. I practice a complete system of health care that is likely to help with almost any condition (well, except trauma. If you’re bleeding you need to be in the ER)- all with only helpful side effects! Whoop whoop!
If you are committed to reclaiming your health and vitality, then join the hundreds of folks I’ve already helped and call today to schedule a consultation.
